The story begins in Laglio, a small northern Italian town on the banks of Lake Como, one day in the Spring of 1842, during the reign of Ferdinand I of Hapsberg, Emperor of Austria and Lombardy-Venetia. Men in Laglio had always been fishermen who also used to build boats. As such, they were capable of casting fishing-lines, threading nets and weaving fish-baskets with the same expertise with which they handled the construction of their boats |

Willem Heeren werd in 1837 geboren in een klein vissersdorp ten zuiden van Amsterdam.Ondanks dat Willem Heeren uit een vissersgezin kwam, ging zijn interesse meer uit naar het schilderen van boerderijen in het nieuwe land van deHaarlemmermeer. In de winter, wanneer er niet geschilderd kon worden, maakte Willem Heeren zijn eigen verf. Het mengen van verf werd steeds belangrijker en in 1902 stichtte Willem Heeren samen met zijn zoon Albert de kleine verffabriek W. Heeren & Zoon in Aalsmeer waar ze onder de merknaam Epifanes een hele lijn aflkakken op basis van lijnolie produceerden. |
