Shearwater Sailing Shearwater Sailing
Submitted: 08/10/03 (Edited 12/03/03)
Description: The Shearwater is an 82-foot classic luxury schooner named after a seagoing bird. She is built from Georgia Pine with brass and marble furnishings, offering an elegant atmosphere that only a 1920's era yacht can deliver. As she heels over and puts her shoulder into the breeze and the wake fans out astern, you will cherish the moment and remember it forever. Shearwater Sailing began making its distinctive excursions in New York Harbor in 2001. Today, Shearwater offers up to five sails per day between the months of April and October from its berth in the North Cove Marina in Downtown Manhattan. Highlights of each two hour tour include a dazzling viewof the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Brooklyn Waterfront, and a chance to learn interesting lore from the boat's crew. The company is led by its founder, Thomas Berton, 38, a lifelong sailing enthusiast and former import-export executive. The vessel is USCG certified to carry 48 passengers.
